Cindy Preston is the secretary at First Shepherd. She hates Mondays and especially this Monday as it is the beginning of Holy Week for the church. Cindy decides to get to work early this Monday to get a jump start on the week. What she finds is the sanctuary door unlocked and open. Thinking that the youth group left it open accidentally the night before Cindy goes in to make sure all is cleaned up. When she trips over something in the dark she thinks that something was left after the youth event, but what she discovers is a dead body!
Hearing Cindy's screams from his synagogue next door rabbi Jeremiah Silverman rushes over to help. This is only the beginning of Jeremiah rushing to save Cindy.
A serial killer is on the loose and it looks like he is performing for Cindy. Everywhere a dead body turns up Cindy seems to be in the area or has been in the area recently. The killer is reenacting the events leading up to the crucifixion. Arranging his murdered victims into tableaux settings, the police, Cindy and Jeremiah try to figure out where the killer will strike next, but they always seem to be a step behind. How many more people will die before he is found and is Cindy on his list of victims?
This is the first in the Psalm 23 Mysteries and I have to say I am hooked! I'm looking forward to plunging into the next book. I think Cindy and Jeremiah are the perfect couple to solve crimes, but their religious backgrounds may get in the way of them having a relationship. Cindy is Christian and Jeremiah is Jewish which makes for some interesting dialogue between the two. I loved Cindy at the seder, not being used to alcohol her response after getting a couple of glasses of wine down was quite entertaining. While the murders are grisly I really enjoyed the suspense of this story and am looking forward to seeing what trouble Cindy and Jeremiah get into next.
